DNAL: Debate as a New Approach to Learning
Numerous studies on educational systems and the skills that the labor market will need in the future emphasize the importance of global competence, the ability to understand and appreciate different perspectives, actively participate, and take action for the common good and sustainable development.
In the field of debate education, we recognize that debate is one of the most effective methods for developing soft transferable skills, such as:
Self-management: active learning, adaptability, stress management
Problem-solving: analytical and critical thinking, creativity, strategic thinking
Collaboration: leadership, teamwork, influenceFor this reason, we aim to promote the integration of debate into schools.
Research shows that schools and teachers face three main challenges in this regard:
1. Methodology adapted to different learning environments.
2. Comprehensive teaching materials.
3. A complete set of tools for students in national languages.
The project’s goal is to bring together all aspects of debate methodology and provide teachers with a comprehensive guide for integrating debate at various levels and across different subjects.
The project results include three open educational resources:
Teacher handbook for integrating debate in primary and lower secondary schools
Teacher handbook for integrating debate in upper secondary schools
Student kit for civic learning through debate, translated into partner languages (Finnish, Italian, Lithuanian, Slovenian, Spanish)
Texts were prepared by Rok Hafner, Nuša Stamejčič, and Bojana Skrt, who also served as project coordinator. More information about the project is available at: https://learningdebate.sn-di.it/
